Well, the show opens on Saturday, and nobody is nervous at all. This weekend, Steph, our tech and costume goddess rejoined the ranks and she had this to say: "this is the best I've ever seen this show, and I've seen this show many, MANY times."
I chose some non-action shots from the weekends rehearsals, there's one of Allen and Jerome warming up, please note just how long Chowie's legs are in this photo, the man is a giant. Then we've got Matt sporting the new Kung Fu Hamlet Tee-Shirts, which will be available at the performances, and whose colors are blue and orange, colors which may or may not be reminiscent of a certain college's colors where several founding members of this company may or may not have gone to college and cheered at soccer games. And of course the mysterious masked man finally appeared at rehearsal, that guy is such a narbo.
Here's some advice from the cast on going into tech week for your show:
Seko: "You're so cocky, let's see you shuffle off THIS Mortal Claw!"
Cara: "Keep your buttpads handy...and sweaty."
Trevor: "Hey Dr. Jones, this is no time for love!"
Haley: "I'm not worried about anything, because I was just crowned prom queen, and that makes me special."
Allen: "I heard if we do a good job, Dawson will change the wood shavings in my cage!"
Mr. Dawson: "Allen's a big fat liar."
Allen: "Your mother's a big fat liar!"
Chowie: "Fight! Fight!"
Mr. Dawson: "Shut up."
Allen: "Your mom shuts up!"
Mr. Dawson: "What?"

Metaphor of the day: Did you ever see that movie Navy Seals? Kung Fu Hamlet is just like that scene where Michael Biehn, who is a Navy Seal, jumps off of a moving Jeep over the side of a bridge and into the water.
Here are some shots of our recent rehearsal. But I leave it to you to decipher them, in fact we'll have a contest to see who can come up with the best caption, and whomever wins the contest wins a free Stinging Serpent Stance of Death t-shirt. It'll be just like that magazine, where you have to come up with a clever caption and you win a prize. I love prizes.

Although from these images it might appear that Allen Wong is the only person who has been rehearsing, that is not true. As you can see, Seko is also rehearsing and for the first time today I got to see some of the stuff they put together for the final fight and it is fantastic. Of course Allen Wong does break out his Drunken Fists, much to the pleasure and amusement of children everywhere, but there are some additional sequences he and Seko put together that will knock your socks off.
In any case I decided to declare tomorrow national Allen Wong day. That means that should you randomly run into someone on the street who is also a kung fu master like yourself, you must fight them. Also you should celebrate by enjoying some of Allen's favorite foods, such as Gyros and french fries. You can also enjoy his favorite beverage: a strawberry malted. You might also want to spend some time partaking in Allen's favorite pasttimes like doing Kung Fu and being a badass. You'll of course want to sing some Allen Carols, like God Rest Ye Merry Dr. Wong, and Just a Gigolo. Then when you go to sleep at night, you should dream all of Allen's favorite dreams, like the one where he hasn't studied for his chemistry final, or the one where his toe dies and comes back as a zombie toe.

We did a bit of a stumble through tonight, but everything seemed to go pretty well. Even though it was mostly about blocking and the like, Allen did do a small bit of kung fu, you know, just to keep it real. Clinton also yukked it up as the gravedigger. That is how you spell yukked, isn't it?
To the best of my knowledge, the final fight is being choreographed somewhere deep underground in the department of mysteries, and digital video cameras don't seem to work down there, which is why I have no images of Allen and Seko beating each other senseless.

All will be broadcast on channel 16 of Time Warner Cable. We got the sweet post Daily Show time slot. We're also going to have it on SPNN for those of you on the East Bank, but unfortunately they have some more ridiculous restrictions so that tape is not ready to go yet and yours truly is departing these shores for Kenosha, WI wherein I will purchase Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince tomorrow night at midnight and read like there's no tomorrow, although at that point it will be reading like there's no day after tomorrow.

Tonight at rehearsal Jerome wanted to know why they call me Crazy Gabe, so I showed him. Some people might think that because we do Kung Fu we don't ever do things like read from the script and stuff, well they're wrong. As you can see we do read from the script quite regularly. And speaking of reading, did you ever wonder if the Pensieve is actually a reliable way to store memories? I mean, when Harry goes into Dumbledore's memories of the Death Eater trials, is he seeing exactly what happened, or is he just seeing things the way Dumbledore remembers them happening? Can you alter your memories with magic once they're in the Pensieve? You must be able to or else the Pensieve would be the greatest crime-solving tool in the world, right? Cause they could pull out your memory and just see what happened. You know at the end of Prisoner of Azkaban how Lupin says that he saw Harry, Ron and Hermione on the Maurauder's Map going down to Hagrid's hut, well how come he didn't see Harry and Hermione who had traveled back in time also? I mean really, there should have been two of them, the map never lies after all...
And one last thing, what's up with Dumbledore's watch that he pulls out at the beginning of Sorcerer's Stone, you know, the one with the planets and the moons and crap? Do you think it might be some sort of destiny watch? Or is it just a normal watch with planets, kind of like that Haley's Comet Swatch?

For your information, I put the finishing touches on The Official Behind the Scenes Making of Documentary of Kung Fu Hamlet and dropped the tape off at MTN. They're going to mail me the air dates and times very soon. It'll get played four times for certain, and then they'll use it for filler as it is needed. Due to Matt and Chowie's sailor-like employment of vulgarity in everyday conversation and indeed during the extremely professional interview conducted by me and Bill, the show will be broadcast between 10pm and midnight. I'll post the air dates once I receive them. And on a side note to the cast and crew, I might have misspelled your name in the credits and if I did, then who gives a crap it's gonna be on MTN, who watches MTN anyway?
Some of you might have heard that my little sister Cassie(star of Bored to Death [that's her scowling]and the 8/7 Central commercial breaks) will be coming up to the cities very soon to shoot more behind the scenes and interview footage for an even longer documentary that we'll cut together and feature on the KFH Special Edition DVD. By the way it is her birthday today, so eat some cake and make her some nice wishes. There were some nice highlights, I especially liked the Master-of-the-Flying-Guillotine-extendo-arms Mukesh guy, it was a nice Dhalsim effect. Dan Hetzel was spot on as Lu Bu (lord of kung fu island), and Anger The Hate Creature was a very funny puppet. On the whole the actors did a pretty decent job with the fight choreography, given they aren't trained martial artists. They clearly had a good teacher. Michael Kline, who did the fight choreography, came on at the end and did a little demonstration. Not that this has anything to do with the quality of the show, but Josh Hartnett was in attendance and many a female was swooning. It was an entertaining evening, and the second act really picked up the pace, but it is a very different show than Kung Fu Hamlet - oh, screw all this diplomacy.
ATTENTION CAST OF KUNG FU ISLAND: We Hereby challenge you to a rumble to decide once and for all whose is the superior Kung Fu show! After school by the bike racks. But BEWARE Chowie might have to show you his STINGING SERPENT STANCE OF DEATH!!! What's that I smell? Oh, I do believe it is FEAR, I can smell your FEAR over the internet! That's the latest Firefox application: Smellternet! TREMBLE at our knowledge of cutting edge technology! QUAKE as you ponder the painful thrashings that await you! MAKE RESERVATIONS at a hotel in some other city where you will surely go to hide out after our cast of kung fu thugs defeats you in all out martial arts warfare!

It's been a slow week for Kung Fu Hamlet. Matt Dawson is busy teching a show at the Illusion, promotion has been halted due to the lack of ink in my printer, but the Official behind-the-scenes making-of documentary thing is coming along swimmingly. And as such, I thought I would take another moment to stroll down memory lane and look at what happened today in No Refunds Theatre Co. History... well, it looks like Allen Wong, master of drunken fists, used my video camera to check his hair. While digging through the No Refunds video archives I came across this fine example of why gabe shouldn't be allowed to direct any more shows. Here's Chesa getting slimed at the climax of last year's production of 8/7 Central. Man, what a mess that was, whenever I smell temper paint and shaving cream with menthol I get a pretty sinister flashback to that big vat of slime slowly coagulating on top of the stove.
Since we're talking about the 80's, it should be mentioned that Haley Chamberlain, who plays Queen Gertrude in Kung Fu Hamlet and whom some might recognize from 8/7 Central, will be appearing in Awesome 80's Prom opening July 7th at the Hennepin Stages. Some people like to relax on holidays... We like to FIGHT! 3rd of July saw the incoporation of the voice actors into several scenes. Pictured right to left is Trevor Hartman, Mary Ellen McCormick and Ryan Kathmann. Trevor and Mary Ellen are returning from the original production, much to our relief and pleasure. We picked up Ryan hitchhiking cross country with one of those sticks and polka dot handkerchief sacks. He's trying to find his stolen bike, let us all help him look for it together. Mary Ellen can also be seen right now in an outdoor production of Hamlet at Century College.
Chris Howie had this to say: "I was picking Mutual Funds earlier, and I was picking winners!"
Matt Dawson doled out ample helpings of pain and wisdom during the Polonious Family Fight scene. Seko can be seen doing push ups for fun in the background.
Haley got another opportunity to beat up on Cara which was fun for all! Check out those Hogwarts sweat pants (12 days people!)
And I paged through the script wondering when the crap we were going to rehearse one of my scenes...
Later on some people came over to my place to enjoy Guacamole, Tahitian Treat and Master Killer of Shaolin. You know, they call him the Master Killer, but in the movie, I don't think Gordon Liu kills one single person. Unless that guy he flips up in the air with his head at the end dies.
If you feel like helping us out: my brother, Ian, is currently working on a new ultimate final battle song for the Hamlet vs Laertes fight and he's trying to find some sweet dramatic choral music to sample (something besides Carmina Burmana, if you please). Suggestions are welcome.
One last thing, Allen Wong, the good doctor, called from New York, he sends out his love to all his mad minnesotan homies and he wishes he were here. We wish you were here too, Allen.

Tonight the Family Polonious went at it. Cara (Ophelia) edumacated Matt Dawson (Polonious) on some of the subtle and not so subtle possibilities offered by running Pak Sao and Hu Bud hand drills. Then she knocked Seko Tongola (Laertes) into last week with an especially vengeful backfist.
Something Matt Dawson would like everyone to look for when you all come see the show in August is how the Family Polonious fights with a southern, Wing Chung Kung Fu, which includes a lot more handwork. Whereas the Elsinore clan (Hamlet, the Queen and the Ghost) fight with Northern Shaolin Kung Fu, which involves more flashy kicks. I say who gives a crap about that and let's see if we can work in a mud wrestling scene in this production. I guess that's why I play Mr. Guildenstern.
However yours truly did get a few lessons in Wing Chung at rehearsal, so beware. What with zombies still being cool and all, I thought I might share a few of the images, which will probably make their way to the Zombiemania page, once we get it built.
For those of you unfamiliar with Zombiemania, we chopped off Chowie's head with an axe, it flew across the stage, I hit it out of the air with a baseball bat and it splattered all over the set and theater. It was the big zombie effect in the show, not quite as innovative as the vacuum cleaner head, but certainly as flashy. My brother Ian cast his own head to make the zombie head. He designed and constructed all the effects. You can see him in some of the pictures. He's the good-looking one.

Well, the show opens on Saturday, and nobody is nervous at all. This weekend, Steph, our tech and costume goddess rejoined the ranks and she had this to say: "this is the best I've ever seen this show, and I've seen this show many, MANY times."
I chose some non-action shots from the weekends rehearsals, there's one of Allen and Jerome warming up, please note just how long Chowie's legs are in this photo, the man is a giant. Then we've got Matt sporting the new Kung Fu Hamlet Tee-Shirts, which will be available at the performances, and whose colors are blue and orange, colors which may or may not be reminiscent of a certain college's colors where several founding members of this company may or may not have gone to college and cheered at soccer games. And of course the mysterious masked man finally appeared at rehearsal, that guy is such a narbo.
Here's some advice from the cast on going into tech week for your show:
Seko: "You're so cocky, let's see you shuffle off THIS Mortal Claw!"
Cara: "Keep your buttpads handy...and sweaty."
Trevor: "Hey Dr. Jones, this is no time for love!"
Haley: "I'm not worried about anything, because I was just crowned prom queen, and that makes me special."
Allen: "I heard if we do a good job, Dawson will change the wood shavings in my cage!"
Mr. Dawson: "Allen's a big fat liar."
Allen: "Your mother's a big fat liar!"
Chowie: "Fight! Fight!"
Mr. Dawson: "Shut up."
Allen: "Your mom shuts up!"
Mr. Dawson: "What?"

Metaphor of the day: Did you ever see that movie Navy Seals? Kung Fu Hamlet is just like that scene where Michael Biehn, who is a Navy Seal, jumps off of a moving Jeep over the side of a bridge and into the water.
Here are some shots of our recent rehearsal. But I leave it to you to decipher them, in fact we'll have a contest to see who can come up with the best caption, and whomever wins the contest wins a free Stinging Serpent Stance of Death t-shirt. It'll be just like that magazine, where you have to come up with a clever caption and you win a prize. I love prizes.

Although from these images it might appear that Allen Wong is the only person who has been rehearsing, that is not true. As you can see, Seko is also rehearsing and for the first time today I got to see some of the stuff they put together for the final fight and it is fantastic. Of course Allen Wong does break out his Drunken Fists, much to the pleasure and amusement of children everywhere, but there are some additional sequences he and Seko put together that will knock your socks off.
In any case I decided to declare tomorrow national Allen Wong day. That means that should you randomly run into someone on the street who is also a kung fu master like yourself, you must fight them. Also you should celebrate by enjoying some of Allen's favorite foods, such as Gyros and french fries. You can also enjoy his favorite beverage: a strawberry malted. You might also want to spend some time partaking in Allen's favorite pasttimes like doing Kung Fu and being a badass. You'll of course want to sing some Allen Carols, like God Rest Ye Merry Dr. Wong, and Just a Gigolo. Then when you go to sleep at night, you should dream all of Allen's favorite dreams, like the one where he hasn't studied for his chemistry final, or the one where his toe dies and comes back as a zombie toe.

We did a bit of a stumble through tonight, but everything seemed to go pretty well. Even though it was mostly about blocking and the like, Allen did do a small bit of kung fu, you know, just to keep it real. Clinton also yukked it up as the gravedigger. That is how you spell yukked, isn't it?
To the best of my knowledge, the final fight is being choreographed somewhere deep underground in the department of mysteries, and digital video cameras don't seem to work down there, which is why I have no images of Allen and Seko beating each other senseless.

We're also going to have it on SPNN for those of you on the East Bank, but unfortunately they have some more ridiculous restrictions so that tape is not ready to go yet and yours truly is departing these shores for Kenosha, WI wherein I will purchase Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince tomorrow night at midnight and read like there's no tomorrow, although at that point it will be reading like there's no day after tomorrow.

Tonight at rehearsal Jerome wanted to know why they call me Crazy Gabe, so I showed him. Some people might think that because we do Kung Fu we don't ever do things like read from the script and stuff, well they're wrong. As you can see we do read from the script quite regularly. And speaking of reading, did you ever wonder if the Pensieve is actually a reliable way to store memories? I mean, when Harry goes into Dumbledore's memories of the Death Eater trials, is he seeing exactly what happened, or is he just seeing things the way Dumbledore remembers them happening? Can you alter your memories with magic once they're in the Pensieve? You must be able to or else the Pensieve would be the greatest crime-solving tool in the world, right? Cause they could pull out your memory and just see what happened. You know at the end of Prisoner of Azkaban how Lupin says that he saw Harry, Ron and Hermione on the Maurauder's Map going down to Hagrid's hut, well how come he didn't see Harry and Hermione who had traveled back in time also? I mean really, there should have been two of them, the map never lies after all...
And one last thing, what's up with Dumbledore's watch that he pulls out at the beginning of Sorcerer's Stone, you know, the one with the planets and the moons and crap? Do you think it might be some sort of destiny watch? Or is it just a normal watch with planets, kind of like that Haley's Comet Swatch?

For your information, I put the finishing touches on The Official Behind the Scenes Making of Documentary of Kung Fu Hamlet and dropped the tape off at MTN. They're going to mail me the air dates and times very soon. It'll get played four times for certain, and then they'll use it for filler as it is needed. Due to Matt and Chowie's sailor-like employment of vulgarity in everyday conversation and indeed during the extremely professional interview conducted by me and Bill, the show will be broadcast between 10pm and midnight. I'll post the air dates once I receive them. And on a side note to the cast and crew, I might have misspelled your name in the credits and if I did, then who gives a crap it's gonna be on MTN, who watches MTN anyway?
Some of you might have heard that my little sister Cassie(star of Bored to Death [that's her scowling]and the 8/7 Central commercial breaks) will be coming up to the cities very soon to shoot more behind the scenes and interview footage for an even longer documentary that we'll cut together and feature on the KFH Special Edition DVD. It's been a slow week for Kung Fu Hamlet. Matt Dawson is busy teching a show at the Illusion, promotion has been halted due to the lack of ink in my printer, but the Official behind-the-scenes making-of documentary thing is coming along swimmingly. And as such, I thought I would take another moment to stroll down memory lane and look at what happened today in No Refunds Theatre Co. History... well, it looks like Allen Wong, master of drunken fists, used my video camera to check his hair. While digging through the No Refunds video archives I came across this fine example of why gabe shouldn't be allowed to direct any more shows. Here's Chesa getting slimed at the climax of last year's production of 8/7 Central. Man, what a mess that was, whenever I smell temper paint and shaving cream with menthol I get a pretty sinister flashback to that big vat of slime slowly coagulating on top of the stove.
Since we're talking about the 80's, it should be mentioned that Haley Chamberlain, who plays Queen Gertrude in Kung Fu Hamlet and whom some might recognize from 8/7 Central, will be appearing in Awesome 80's Prom opening July 7th at the Hennepin Stages.
